Inside the mind of a reefer

It all started with Sea Monkeys

Dolomite is dyn-o-mite....

Did you know that you can add Dolomite to your calcium reactor to maintain your Magnesium?

Well now you do....

I fill my calcium reactor with about 90% large grain schuran type reactor media and 10% dolomite.

Because dolomite is so hard you need to drop the ph in your reactor to about 6.2pH to melt it which is why it's important to use a larger reactor media. If you use crushed coral the pH is too low and turns the media in to sludge at the bottom of the reactor chamber.

This will only maintain your magnesium, if you need to raise it you'll need to use a magnesium supplement first. Dt's Pure Mg works well as does ESV B-Ionic Magnesium

Magnesium should be kept around 1250ppm to 1350ppm

The only down side to this is that it can lower the pH of your system, but this can be rectified a couple different ways.

  1. you can route your skimmer air intake out side to get fresh air, this will increase the oxygen levels in the tank and help rais the pH
  2. you can dose Kalkwasser(limewater) calcium hydroxide
  3. you can run your refugium lighting on a reverse cycle, this allows photosynthesis to continue while the tank lights are out
  4. If these don't work you can also add a second chamber to your reactor to use up any leftover CO2. This will help raise the pH of the effluent.
